The beaches of Newquay

Fistral

Fistral beach is one of Newquay's largest and is world famous for holding national and international surfing championships. Locals and holidaymakers all hope for the 'big one' whilst here. New facilities include lifeguard centre and first aid facilities.

The Harbour

This is a busy but small beach favoured by locals. You can watch the many boats that come and go from the harbour as fishermen head out or return from their catch. There are pleasure boat trips available at the harbour - as well as many fishing expeditions including mackerel fishing and shark fishing ! You may be lucky enough to encounter the seals which sometimes inhabit the area.

Towan

At the eastern end of this bay is one of Newquay's best known landmarks : The Island. This is now a tea garden but for a long time was a private residence, it is reached by a suspension bridge modelled on the Clifton Bridge. A firm family favourite with the beach being the closest to the main town centre and also housing the Sealife Centre which is located on the promenade.

Great Western

This beach can be reached at low tide from the right of the Island and is sheltered by high cliffs which shade the beach in late afternoon. It can also be reached by a steep slope leading off Cliff Road, next to the Great Western Hotel.

Tolcarne

Reached by a flight of steps down the cliff face from Narrowcliff or a winding slope at the eastern end of the beach, Tolcarne is favoured by surfers and families. This is a privately owned beach and the beach huts are available for hire. For more information, visit www.tolcarnebeach.co.uk
